We hadn’t yet done a big bike trip this year, so when a friend asked if we wanted to bike all the way to Paradise Beach in Ajax, 50km east of Toronto, we said sure!

Exactly one year ago, we were biking around Kona exploring the sights, and came to some conclusions about cycling in Hawaii…

It’s been a year since we vacationed in Hawaii—just before the WHO declared COVID-19 a worldwide pandemic. We’re currently hunkered down in another lockdown in cold Canada, so thought it was a good time to finish blogging about Bromptoning in tropical Hawaii!
-
This was an epic ride with breathtakingly beautiful scenery and a rainstorm of biblical proportions.
-
We took our Bromptons to explore the wild juxtaposition that is The Spit – half construction dumping zone, half protected wildlife park – in the heart of downtown Toronto.
-
We haven’t cycled much on Toronto’s east side, so we took the GO train to Rouge Hill station and checked out the eastern edge of the Waterfront Trail and the Highland Creek Trail.

We did this bike ride in February 2020, less than two years after Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted and lava covered 35 square-kms of land in the Puna area. It turned out to be our favourite ride on the The Big Island!
-
We cycled east from Hilo to the beaches in one afternoon at a leisurely pace with lots of breaks for sightseeing, relaxing and watching the turtles. Yes, the reward for making it to the end of Kalanianaole Ave is turtles!
-
Our first day in Hawaii was a crash course in taking the Hele-On Bus! We also saw our first black-and-white sand beach, found some petroglyphs, and discovered how unrelentingly steep Hilo’s streets are en route to our AirBnB.

We took our folding bikes on the ferry to Isla Mujeres and cycled around the whole island in half a day!
